Lightweight Electric Bikes - What You Need To Know

Lightweight Electric Bikes - What You Need To Know

Because E-bikes have a motor and battery plus their frames and components are stronger they will be heavier than non powered bikes. However when you are riding an E-Bike under assistance that little extra weight is barely noticeable.

If you are looking for a lighter alternative because you need to lift your bike upstairs, regularly onto a car rack, or prefer the look or feel of riding an e-bike that resembles a conventional bicycle we offer a range of bikes which weigh less than 20kg.

To keep the weight down these super-light E-Bikes feature smaller batteries usually between 250Wh and 450Wh, meaning the overall range will be less than a heavier model. The battery is normally charged while it's in the bike, so you will need to bring the bike inside, or have access to a socket in a garage or shed etc to top up.

The distance you can ride an ebike on a single charge, depends on how many hills you ride up, as well as the selected power mode and battery plus even the weather (and more), it’s not an exact science.

Even with a smaller capacity battery, concealed neatly in the frame of a lightweight electric bike, you should be able to cycle with assistance for up to 30 miles, more than enough for most riders.

On some systems such as Mahle there is the option to add a range extender, making bigger challenges and longer adventures possible.

Most lightweight electric bikes feature a rear hub motor, apart from the new Cube Editor which is fitted with the brand new Bosch Performance SX crank system.

Generally the motors don't provide quite as much power as a regular e-bike but still deliver all the benefits. Many riders use the motor assistance when needed and cycle unassisted on the flats and downhills. When not being ridden under power lightweight E-Bikes have low resistance and because they feature narrower tyres they roll easily

On a quick glance these lightweight bikes also don’t look like electric bikes and are an excellent choice for many riders.
